House-Arryn-0

House Arryn of the Eyrie is one of great houses of Westeros, and is the principal noble house in the Vale. Their main seat is the Eyrie, but they have many other holdings, including their winter castle at the Gates of the Moon. Both of these fortifications sit astride the Giant's Lance, the tallest mountain in the Vale, and the Eyrie is considered impregnable. Their sigil is a white moon-and-falcon on a sky-blue field, and their words are "As High as Honor". Their line dates back to the old Andal peoples that invaded Westeros. Usually marrying other Andal nobles, House Arryn to this day has the purest line of Andal nobility.

Seats[]

The Eyrie[]

The Eyrie is the ancient seat of House Arryn. It is situated in the Mountains of the Moon astride the peak known as the Giant's Lance, several thousand feet above the valley floor below. It's considered impregnable to attack. To reach the Eyrie, an invading army would have to overcome the Bloody Gate guarding the High Road, then overcome the Gates of the Moon located at the bottom of the mountain and climb up the narrow goat trail. Under normal circumstances this would take half a day, all the while being exposed to attack from the defenders in the Eyrie and its three waycastles along the path: Stone, Snow, Sky. The Eyrie is located six hundred feet above the latter.

The Eyrie is the smallest of the great castles, consisting only of a cluster of seven slim, white towers bunched tightly together. They can hold up to five hundred men. The castle is made of fine white stone. The towers encircle a garden, which had been meant as a godswood, but no weirwood tree would take root in the stony soil. The barracks and stables are carved directly into the mountain. Though it is a small castle, the granary is as large as those found in much larger castles, like Winterfell. The High Hall of the Arryns, the Moon Door, the crescent chamber, and the infamous sky cells are also found within.

During winter years, the Arryns seek refuge against the cold at the base of the mountain in the Gates of the Moon.

Gates of the Moon[]

The Gates of the Moon was originally built by House Arryn when they were still Kings of Mountain and Vale, before Aegon's Conquest. It is used by House Arryn as their seat during winter, and when summer comes they return to the Eyrie

The Gates of the Moon is a stout castle with a moat, a gatehouse, a yard, and square towers. It is larger than the Eyrie. At night torches flicker at its ramparts and the moon is reflected in its moat. Beyond its postern gate is a dense forest of pine and spruce, as well as the steep, carved steps along the Giant's Lance.

Gull Hall[]

The home of the Arryns of Gulltown, and the keep of Gulltown. The Arryns of Gulltown are a cadet branch of House Arryn whose members are primarily focused on trade. The merchant Arryns are often not associated with the rest of the Arryns and known for being uncouth at times. A recent marriage between the two Arryn branches greatly improved relations and brought the two houses closer together. Following the destruction of the Graftons after the Second Conquest, Gulltown became the domain of the Gulltown Arryns, and Gull Hall became the city's seat, situated upon a hill overlooking the docks.

History[]

Prior to The First Era[]

Artys Arryn, part of the Andal invasion, defeated the Griffin King to take the Vale, later renamed to the Vale of Arryn. The Arryns ruled as Kings of the Mountain and the Vale for many years until Aegon's Conquest. Visenya, sister and wife of Aegon landed her dragon in the Eyrie and the young Lord of the Eyrie wished to ride. His mother and regent surrendered to end the war between Aegon and the Vale and swore fealty, and the boy got his ride and later took a Targaryen wife in adulthood.

First Era[]

Under the Targaryens, the Arryns lived through many great events. In the Dance of Dragons, Jeyne Arryn, the Lady of the Vale, fought for the Blacks with her relative Rhaenyra Targaryen. It was Jon Arryn who began Robert's Rebellion. Jon refused to surrender his wards, Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon to Aerys II, the Mad King. During this time, numerous tragedies befell the Arryn family leaving only Jon. He would later have a son, Robert Arryn with Lysa Tully. Jon served King Robert as his hand until his death under suspicious circumstances. When the Clash of Kings erupted the Vale remained neutral. Petyr Baelish, then Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, married the boy lord's mother. Upon Lady Lysa's murder, Baelish took control of the Vale as regent. Baelish tried to wed Alayne Stone, later revealed to be Sansa Stark, to Harold Hardyng, the heir to the Vale with no remaining Arryns. It was at this time that that the Lords Declarant planned to usurp the Vale from Petyr. An small force from the Lords attacked the wedding and Harold Hardyng was killed. Petyr Baelish was helped into hiding by Sansa. He would later flee the Vale for the Riverlands where he would return to Harrenhal and surrender to King Aegon VI.

Second Era[]

Sansa Stark became Sansa Arryn when she married young Robert. Sansa slowly plotted the demise of all members of the Lords Declarant and ended their rebellion. The sickly Robert would surprise everyone's expectations and grow into a valiant knight. Nestor Royce, who came into possesion of a dagger of a Valyrian steel after Petyr Baelish's escape, gifted the blade on his death bed to Robert. The Arryn line continued after Sansa bore several children. Robert's successes against the sickness of his childhood would eventually be undone and he died young leaving Sansa as regent. Sansa would as regent and later matriarch of the family for years to come. She became known as Sansa the Webweaver for her webs of intrigue which brought down the Lords Declarant and solidified Arryn power in the Vale for generations.

During the reign of King Aemond I Targaryen, numerous great lords including Lord Artys Arryn planned his death. Other well known members included Tybolt Lannister, Rodwell Stark, and Beron Harlaw. Shortly before the beginning of the Third Era, Artys Arryn's brother was lost at sea in a winter storm, and his wife died in a snowstorm the following year.

Third Era[]

Following the deaths of his wife and brother, Artys Arryn began a descent into depression.

604th AC -[]

Towards the beginning of the year, Prince Olyvar Martell, fell severely ill and suddenly died. His death shocked Lord Artys, and he felt his death also had do with the plot against King Aemond, furthering his depression. As Autumn fell upon the Seven Kingdoms, Arys succumbed to his depression and leaped through the Moon Door. At about the same time, King Aemond drew his last breaths. The Fledgling Lord Ronnel Arryn and his sister sailed to King's Landing for the coronation and feast for King Lucerys I. At the feast Rodwell Stark and Anya Stark, uncle and aunt to the current lord, were poisoned. Ronnel's cousin, Walton, would later declare himself the King in the North. Aemma Arryn, rather than returning to the Vale, sailed to Dragonstone to see the visions she had begun having. Ronnel began to organize a marriage to Mina Redwyne.
